DVDs are not as popular as they used to be, but they won’t be washed out soon because a lot of people are still buying them and they are still an important source of revenue.
For collectors, a hard copy of their favorite movie franchise is necessary. The point is more about owning them than actually watching them with a DVD player. But the more you watch them, the higher the risk of damaging them. To better protect DVDs and prevent damages, digitizing them is a good choice.
If you are one of those collectors, you should probably have your collection digitized. That way you can watch your favorite movies on your computer or your phone easily and you will have a digital copy of your collection so if your DVDs got damaged, you can still watch the movie. For Windows users, here’s how to digitize DVDs on Windows. This post will solely focus on converting DVD to digital video format on Mac.
How to digitize DVDs on Mac using Leawo DVD Ripper for Mac
There are several different ways to convert DVD to digital Mac users could try, but in this post, I will only introduce two methods with 2 different programs.
One program on my list for the DVD digitizing job is Leawo DVD Ripper for Mac. there are a few reason why I’d make it my first choice. First off, it can convert DVDs with copyright protection and region codes. So it doesn’t matter if your DVDs are protected or not because it can get them taken care of without the protection being a problem. Also, the output video is of high quality and it offers a lot of format for you to choose from for it. Another important reason why I trust this program for the job is that the developer of the program, Leawo Software, is a famous multimedia processing software developer and the company also has a lot of other high-quality Blu-ray/DVD processing programs. And Leawo DVD Ripper for Mac has been integrated into the company’s software suite called Prof. Media.
Here’s how it works.
Step 1. Fire up Prof.Media on your Mac and look for the icon of DVD Ripper. When you find it, click on it to open the interface of the DVD Ripper.
Step 2. Load the content of the disk by clicking the Add Blu-ray/DVD button. You should see an Add from CD-ROM option from the following drop-down menu. Use this option to load disc content.
Step 3. There will be a new page for the DVD importing process. On it you will see 3 modes for importing the disc content, a title list showing all the titles in the disc and a video preview window for playing videos in the disc. The 3 modes are Full Movie, Main Movie and Custom Mode. Full Movie loads the whole disc to the program. Main Movie only loads the movie, which, by default, is the longest video in the disc. Custom Mode is for you to manually choose the titles to import from the title list on the left column. After choosing one mode, click OK to confirm your choice and the chosen content will be loaded in the video file list.
Step 4. Above the video file list there’s a Format button which is on the left side of the Convert button with a green background color. The green Convert button could be easily seen so you should also find the Format button easily. On the format button is the label that shows the current output format. Click on it and you will see 3 more options, two of them are Edit and Change. Click on Change to jump to the output format list and choose one from it. After finding the ideal format, click it to select it as the default output format and you will return to the interface at the same time the format is set as default. Use the Edit button mentioned above to change the parameters of the format you just chose.
Step 5. Click Convert in the upper right section and there will be a sidebar coming out from the right side of the video list. The last thing to do before starting the digitizing process is set where to save the resulting output videos in. The output path is shown at the top of the sidebar whereas the Convert button for starting the digitizing process is at the bottom. Have the output path set properly and click the Convert button to start digitizing your DVD on Mac.

How to digitize DVDs on Mac with MakeMKV
MakeMKV is also a great choice for digitizing DVDs. The reason why I didn’t go with Handbrake is that you will have to go extra miles to get Handbrake to rip protected DVDs and it might seem too complicated for beginners. And MakeMKV is a lot easier to use than Handbrake regarding DVD digitization.
MakeMKV is also very easy to operate because there aren’t many settings you need to go through. You can do all things in the same interface.
- Step 1. Put the disc in your DVD drive and launch MakeMKV.
- Step 2. MakeMKV will detect the disc soon after launching. You can tell the disc is detected by the appearance of a DVD drive icon showing up in the center of the interface. Click on the icon and MakeMKV will start to import the content in the disc to MakeMKV.
- Step 3. When the whole disc is loaded, the content in the disc will be listed on the left side in the Titles menu. Click on Title to extend it and see all the content in the disc. Check the box in front of the subtitles, audio tracks and video clips you need to make them selected so that when you start the digitizing process, they will be included in the output video.
- Step 4. Just like every program, you will have to set the output path first before you can start digitizing the DVD. The output path is designed to sit on the right side of the Title menu. Choose the right location for the output file and then click the MakeMKV button next to the output path, and MakeMKV will start converting the DVD to a MKV video. For a regular DVD, it might take 30 to 60 minutes to get the whole digitizing process done so you probably won’t want to just wait there for it to finish.

MakeMKV can only create MKV video files and the resulting video files are usually much larger than a normal, compressed movie file.

That’s how to convert DVD to digital Mac users could try. Both programs can do a great job digitizing your DVD collection. Leawo DVD Ripper for Mac offers more output video and the resulting video is smaller than MakeMKV’s MKV video but the quality is basically as good. If you care about quality more than anything else and have a lot of storage space on your hard drive, go with MakeMKV. But if you only have limited space for movies but still want a high quality digital copy of your DVD disc, Leawo DVD Ripper for Mac would be the ideal choice.
