For Apple devices with iOS 11 or macOS High Sierra or newer, Apple was careful to add safeguards that prevent HEIC compatibility problems.

What the heck is HEIC?
HEIC is Apple’s new default image format in iOS 11, replacing JPEG.
Stored as .HEIC files, it is a version of technology called HEIF – High Efficiency Image Format – It’s the file format that latest HEVC-encoded images use.
